No reviews

A thick, sweet-savory Japanese sauce built on balance rather than intensity. This homemade tonkatsu sauce is designed to complement fried foods without overpowering them. It’s smooth, glossy, and quietly addictive.

  • Total Time: 12 minutes
  • Yield: 1 cup 1x

Ingredients

Scale

½ cup ketchup

2 tablespoons soy sauce

2 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon rice vinegar

1 tablespoon grated apple

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

1. Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan.

2. Whisk gently over medium-low heat until smooth.

3. Let the sauce simmer softly for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally.

4. Remove from heat and allow it to cool before serving.

Notes

The sauce will thicken naturally as it cools.

Do not over-reduce; thickness develops with rest, not heat.

Taste again after cooling before adjusting seasoning.
